A Psalm In Review - 9/5/2021 - Pastor David Rhymes

Psalm 119:160-176

What does the Bible say about itself? How applicable is it to my life today? How should I respond to the teachings of the Bible? These final verses from Psalm 119 serve as a review of the entire psalm and help us to seek, worship, and trust God.

A Full Heart - 8/22/2021

Psalm 119:145-160

Any kind of half-hearted commitment in life usually leads to poor results, regardless of what we are committing ourselves to. This goes for the life of faith as well. The Psalmist teaches us that only a whole-hearted commitment to God will lead us to true peace, and our pleas for mercy in life will bring us the mercy we need because God is faithful and He cares for us.

Promises Well Tried - 8/15/2021

Psalm 119:129-144

In the age of misinformation and fake news, finding a source of truth that you can trust can be really difficult. How can you be sure that what someone is telling you or what they are promising is actually worthy of your trust? The promises of God are “well-tried” as the Psalmist tells us, having been tested and proven true over the course of hundreds of generations. God’s well-proven promises are sufficient to build our lives upon and to give us hope.

According to Love - 8/8/2021

Psalm 119:113-128

When we are looking for a kind of shelter from the hard days and storms of life, there is only one that never fails us. Jesus is the hiding place for the troubled and weary soul. This leads any who trust in him to make Him the greatest and highest boast of their lives.

Why Love God’s Law? - 8/1/2021

Psalm 119:97-112

The journey of life is a lot more treacherous than we’d like to admit. There are decisions at every turn. Many voices vying for our attention. Navigating the path requires wisdom and a clear sense of direction. Pastor Dave examines Psalm 119:97-112 to see how God’s Word gives us wisdom for the journey and is the light we need to illuminate our path.

Always Faithful - 7/25/2021

Psalm 119:81-96

Every person will experience from time to time the feeling of being all alone, wondering about the state and direction of their life. The Psalmist is clear when he teaches us that God;s promises anchor our lives in hope, and He is always more faithful to us than we know. Life by faith in God is always better.

God’s Good Work - 7/18/2021

Psalm 119:65-80

The goodness of God is always on display in all areas of life, whether we see it or not. God does some of his best work when we are experiencing and enduring affliction, by which He is refining our faith and teaching us to trust him. Our suffering is never meaningless, so we should always feel free to pray to God for the help we need in every circumstance of life.

A Travelers’ Song - 7/11/2021

Psalm 119:49-64

The music and lyrics of a song have the power to move a person to think and feel in many different and profound ways. The power of a song is undeniable in our world. As sojourners in this life, we are given a beautiful song to sing written by the very Word of God.

Teacher and Learners - 7/4/2021

Psalm 119:33-48

We have all been provided with a tremendous gift for the good of our lives which is the instruction of God. He is the teacher of His people, through the truth of His Word. Those who profess faith in Jesus are the learners of God’s truth, which works itself outwardly in our actions and words. We should pray for understanding and courage to obey.

Life in the Word - 6/27/2021

Psalm 119:17-32

While the world continues to work itself up into a frenzy trying to find the best way to live their lives for personal happiness, those who trust God find life in His Word. The scriptures instruct us in the way of life, designed by God, which brings true happiness and joy to our daily lives. The Word of God leads every believer on the way to true life, but we have to ask ourselves, “will we follow Him?”

True Treasure - 6/20/2021

Psalm 119:1-16

There is no shortage of promises from our world today that offer all sorts of paths to find satisfaction in one’s life. Sadly, all of the ideas conceived by man have no lasting effect and ultimately leave us empty. God promises each of us access to the true treasure of eternal wealth found in His Word, which instructs, comforts, and leads us forward in hope and joy.

Words for Life and Living - 6/13/2021

Introduction to Psalm 119

How necessary is the Word of God in the life of a Christian? We often view God’s Word in the Bible as an add-on or a reference manual for life rather than the living breath of God illuminating our lives and teaching us how to live moment by moment. Psalm 119 emphasizes the tremendous value, beauty, and necessity of God’s Word in our walk with Christ, our daily worship, the worries that plague us, and our public witness.

A Sojourner’s Song - 9/13/2020

Psalm 120

Life is a long journey, and much of it feels like an uphill climb. How do we live as sojourners in this world, making the most of the time we have, but knowing that this life is always going to bring with it times of distress, worry, conflict, and deception? Psalm 120 gives us a vision for how we are to live, by praying for discernment, believing that God is just, and seeking peace where we can.

Our Fortress and Flashlight - 9/6/2020

Psalm 118

Our daily lives are filled with pressures to perform for and please others. We feel the weight of mankind’s constant glare, hoping that our friends still like us and our enemies leave us alone. We all need a refuge, or a fortress, where we are loved and secure without fail. Psalm 118 shows us how Jesus is the better, lasting fortress for our good.

A Song Bigger than Words - 8/30/2020

Psalm 117

Sometimes just a few words can carry tremendous meaning. Our lives are a gift from God for a glorious purpose: Praise! Too often we miss our purpose while chasing other priorities. Psalm 117 teaches us to return to our godly calling into godly faith by living out our song of praise.

Speak to Your Soul - 8/23/2020

Psalm 116

Do you talk to yourself? If so, then you are in good company, because most of us are in constant conversations with ourselves. This is a coping mechanism to make sense of our lives. The good news is that the Word of God encourages us to speak to our souls with the truth of God’s character and deeds. Psalm 116 teaches us why and how to talk to ourselves.

The Direction of Praise - 8/16/2020

Psalm 115

The idea of glory can be elusive, but its essence is acknowledging the worthiness of a being. Every human craves glory, but glory is not ours to take, but to give. God is worthy of ALL glory, which defines the direction of our praise.

God Saves and Stays - 9/9/2020

Psalm 114

God Almighty is not a hero who swoops in to save us and then leaves us to try to make it on our own. He comes to us to rescue us from our fears and then promises to stay near to help us along this journey. Psalm 114 helps us to see that what God creates to be beautiful, he will work continually until it is complete.

Praise Forever - 8/2/2020

Psalm 113

Praise happens in the life of every single person without exception because God created each of us to be a worshiper. Unfortunately, we find “other” things or people to give our praise to, but God alone is worthy of our words and deeds of love. Psalm 113 shows us that we have all the reasons we need to live a life of praise to God, but do we always recognize and remember them?

The Way of Resolute Faith - 7/26/2020

Psalm 112

Faith in God is more than just believing truths about Him; it is a way of living that distinguishes the followers of Jesus from those that do not. What is the WAY of faith and how do we find it? Commitment to living as God has revealed in his Word is where we begin, as Psalm 112 shows us, revealing that God’s way is always better.

The Goodness of God = 7/19/2020

Psalm 111

The God who created the universe and who rescues our lives from death and destruction is an abundantly good God. But how do we know, or how can we know, that God is really good? As we see in Psalm 113, God’s works, covenant, and Word are evidence of His infinite goodness, giving us every reason to praise Him.

Jesus My Lord - 7/12/2020

Psalm 110

The world around us would have us believe that we don’t have any real reasons to surrender our lives to Jesus alone. Our confidence as followers of Jesus is NEVER to be rooted in the cultural climate or in our own abilities. Rather our confidence is to be forever in Christ alone and his perfect work of redemption and his eternal reign as Lord. Psalm 110 is the testimony of the Lordship of Jesus Christ for the good of our confidence in Him.

Love your enemies - 7/5/2020

Psalm 109

How does God expect us to respond to those who seek to malign our character and cause harm to us with false words? It can be very difficult to resist the temptation to treat others in the same way they treat us. Although Psalm 109 has specific, and even troubling language, the posture of David’s heart to pray to God when he is attacked is meant to teach us how to trust Jesus when enemies rise to hurt us.
